We welcome visitors to Pictou Island. Here is some useful information to make your visit to the island more enjoyable.
The John MacCallum Memorial Park is at the East End of the Island, and is open to the public during the day. There is an outhouse, a changing-room, several picnic tables, and a big beach. No camping or fires are permitted. There are no fresh water facilities and all garbage is to be taken home. The Island has no stores, restaurants or campgrounds. All land is privately owned. Permission to camp must be obtained from the owner. You are welcome to hike and bike on our main road. Should you want to visit the North Shore of the Island, please be aware that there is only one public access road (see map). Because of a history of wildfires, and the limited capacity or our volunteer fire department, camp fires are not permitted under any circumstances. There are no garbage facilities on the Island, thus you are required to take your garbage with you. There are dumpsters at the Caribou Wharf. All Provincial hunting restrictions and regulations apply here. Hunter orange and firearm certificates are required. For medical emergencies, phone 911 or go to the nearest house for assistance. There are trained First Responders on the Island. Fast speed internet service is available at our Community Centre. For hours click here. The center computer works on solar power. Please conserve energy for the days when the sun is not shining. Small steps can help save energy:
Only use C@P during open hours. Don't waste time on the computer. Turn the computer off as soon as you are finished.
The ferry schedule is posted on the ferry as well as on the notice board at Pictou Island Wharf. Please find detailed information about the ferry services under Transportation Services. The ferry leaves at the scheduled times click here.
Exceptions to the posted schedule are high winds and passengers in excess of 23. The ferry leaves on time and we go by a strict first come first serve policy. It is not possible to make reservations or to "save" a seat on the ferry. If extra trips are necessary they will be made to ensure that everyone is able to get to or from the Island. Dogs must be leashed and muzzled on the boat and on both wharves.
Please make the process run more smoothy by: Marking your luggage and freight clearly (tape or name tag). Keep the areas for loading/unloading clear at all times. Please feel welcome on Pictou Island. We appreciate your help in keeping our island safe and clean for everyone.
