We are cottage owners at Melmerby Beach for over 35 years, and have looked longinly at Pictou Island from our deck, often saying how we would love to visit. As seniors we would still love to go, and maybe we can host each other some summer.Pat and John Mc Donald 755 1385

Dave - copies of my book are available for sale and the Northumberland Fisheries Museum. Proceeds are being donated to the PI Community Associattion.
The book takes the Rankins, and all of the other Island families, back as far as I could go - to when they first settled on the island, and in some cases to their ancestral hoes in Scotlands. You can reach me at kmaccall@snet.net.

Hello,
I have visited Pictou Island several times and I am doing a project for school. I was wondering what the population of Pictou Island is?
Thanks !
Hi India, The population varies between summer and winter. In winter the number of residents is just under 20. There are approximately 50 seasonal home owners and the summer population can reach well over a 100 on occasion.

You have a great web site here. My mom Florence Rankin is from Pictou Island and I have a strong connection with the place. Looking up my family tree starting with mom then John Jack then Duncan & Annie then Duncan & Katherine " Big Kate " Patterson. I can't find out where the last Duncan was from and who his parents were. Anyone have a suggestion. Also I'm working on the Northumberland Fisheries Museum web site so if you have a chance see the new articles and pictures.
Hi Dave,
Two suggestions for you. You might try calling Ron MacDonald who knows a lot about Pictou Island history (755-2685). Also, a new book was published this past summer, Pictou Island, Nova Scotia:Its History and People by Kenneth MacCallum. It deals with the history of the Island up to the 1930's.
Good Luck.

Hello! We are a homeschooling family and are researching islands of the world, mainly those with small populations. It is mentioned on the wikipedia site that the children do correspondence studies. We would be happy to provide you with information about our city and state if you would like. Enjoy your beautiful area! Lisa and the kids

Wow, the new and improved website looks amazing! I wish I could have made a few more trips to the island this year. I have a professor at SMU and I asked him if he had ever been to Pictou Island(since he boasted of travelling to all the places to be in NS) when I described Pictou Island he was very interested and suggested I write a paper about the island. The class is Atlantic Canadian cultural studies, I don't know why I didnt think of that first. I think I can write a great paper and do the island proud.
